How to Get to Nova Siri: A Practical Guide

Nova Siri doesn’t have its own airport, but it’s easier to reach than you might think, whether by train or by car. Here are all the current options for planning your trip to Terrazzo sullo Ionio.

By plane

The closest airports are Bari Karol Wojtyła (about 150 km) and Brindisi (roughly 140-160 km), both well served by domestic flights and several low-cost European routes. An alternative, especially for those arriving from the south or the Tyrrhenian side of Italy, is Lamezia Terme Airport (about 160 km). From all three, the onward journey is by rental car or private shuttle along the SS106 Ionica coastal road.

It’s worth knowing that Basilicata is working toward its first civil airport: the “Enrico Mattei” airfield in Pisticci, about 30 km from Nova Siri, is currently the subject of an expansion and redevelopment project. For now it remains a facility for private flights, air taxis, and emergency services, but it’s worth watching in the coming years as the area’s accessibility improves.

By train

Nova Siri has its own station, Nova Siri-Rotondella, on the Ionian railway line between Taranto and Reggio Calabria — about 1 km from the Marina and 9 km from the historic centre. It connects to Italy’s main rail routes:

  • From the north (Bologna, Ancona, Bari): the Bari-Taranto-Metaponto-Policoro-Nova Siri line;
  • From Rome: via Battipaglia-Potenza-Metaponto, changing at Metaponto onto the Ionian line;
  • From the south (Reggio Calabria, Crotone, Sibari): regional and Intercity trains running along the Calabrian Ionian coast.

Good news for anyone travelling in the area: starting September 2026, the new Treno della Magna Graecia service launches, adding daily connections between Sibari and Taranto with a stop right in Nova Siri, making both tourist and everyday travel more convenient.

By car

The most flexible way to explore the inland villages on your own:

  • SS106 Ionica (Taranto-Reggio Calabria), Nova Siri exit;
  • A14 motorway (Adriatic side), Palagiano exit, then the SS106 toward Nova Siri;
  • A3 motorway (Salerno-Reggio Calabria), Lauria Nord exit, then the SS653 Sinnica road to the junction with the SS106.

By bus

Nova Siri Marina is connected daily to several Italian cities via long-distance bus lines (check current schedules with operators such as SAJ).
